Why isn’t Manchester United in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup?

After months of anticipation, the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup has finally begun, unveiling its new 32-team format. Among the European teams competing in the tournament are powerhouses such as Real Madrid, PSG, and Bayern Munich. However, notable clubs such as Manchester United and Barcelona are absent from the lineup.
The New Format of the Club World Cup
This revamped edition of the Club World Cup expands from its original 6-team format to include clubs from all FIFA confederations, featuring 12 European top teams, six from CONMEBOL, and even one spot reserved for the host nation. This broadening of representation not only enhances the competitive landscape but also showcases various styles of play from across the globe, creating an exciting tournament for football fans.
Missing Heavyweights: Manchester United and Barcelona
Historically, Manchester United have been one of the most successful clubs, both in England and Europe, boasting three Champions League titles and one UEFA Europa League victory. However, they, along with Barcelona, will not grace this year’s tournament due to their recent struggles in European football.
The Reason Manchester United Did Not Qualify
For this edition of the Club World Cup, European teams were selected based on their UEFA Champions League victories between 2021 and 2024, as well as their UEFA coefficients. Unfortunately for Manchester United, they did not secure any Champions League titles during that time frame and did not rank among the top teams by coefficient, effectively excluding them from the tournament.

Performance Overview: Europa League Heartbreak
Despite their efforts this season, Manchester United fell short in the UEFA Europa League, finishing as runners-up after a narrow 1-0 loss to Tottenham in the final. Compounding their woes, they finished 15th in the Premier League, marking the first occasion since the 2013-14 season that they missed out on European competition entirely. As a result, this absence from the Club World Cup is indicative of a broader decline in their recent performance.
Looking Ahead: Future Prospects for Manchester United
Currently ranked 13th in UEFA’s coefficient, Manchester United faces a significant challenge to raise their profile and reclaim their place among Europe’s elite clubs. There is still a glimmer of hope, however, as they can aim to qualify for the subsequent Club World Cup scheduled for 2029. Other prominent clubs missing out this year include Barcelona, who made a return to the Champions League semifinals for the first time since 2019, and Arsenal, leaving fans eager for a future where their teams can compete at the highest level.
